Aside from jet aircraft which range from very light jets to heavy jets, there is another significant player in the charter market. Turboprops are aircraft that utilize a gas jet engine to operate a propeller rather than jet thrust typically used on larger aircraft. Most turboprop engines are manufactured Pratt & Whitney Canada and Honeywell, known in the aviation community for their reliability and power. As a predecessor to turboprops, the twin-piston aircraft are also a viable choice. Piston aircraft are typically smaller aircraft, seating up to 6 passengers. The piston aircraft are powered by piston engines (or reciprocating engines). “Piston airplanes have one or more piston-powered engines connected a propeller to provide thrust to move the aircraft on the ground and through the air.” – NBAA

How do turboprops compare to jets? Turboprops are a great solution for trips less than 500 miles (300 miles or less for twin-piston aircraft) and for trips into airports with shorter runways inaccessible to larger jets. Unlike jets, many turboprops can easily land on shorter airstrips and can even land in grass airfields vs. needing a traditional runway. While jets can travel at faster speeds than turboprops, having more options in regards to places to land, enables turboprop passengers to get closer to their destinations, often saving time and money.

Turboprops are generally less expensive to operate than jets. Fuel costs and other expenses like maintenance tend to also be lower for props, making them a great option for shorter trips. Seating varies by aircraft model from 4-8 passengers in most turboprops. While a bit smaller than their jet cousins, many turboprops offer comparable cabin comforts and are equipped for both business and relaxation in the air. Contrary to popular thought, modern day turboprops come equipped with  resonance technology that almost entirely cancels out the propeller noise, so they are not generally loud in the cabin. As far as storage, many turboprops have comparable baggage and cabin space as their jet counterparts.

The Cessna Citation Jet 3 was flown for the first time in 2003 as an upgrade to already popular Citation Jet 2. It is the sixth generation of the popular Citation Jet series. With a number of enhancements, this light jet is extremely popular amongst private fliers looking for an economical, reliable and high-performing aircraft.

The Citation Jet 3 (CJ3) was designed for mid-range trips, able to travel 1581 statute miles (or about five hours) before needing a fuel stop. The CJ3 cruises at average speeds of 480 mph and offers impressive short runway capabilities, allowing it to be chartered in and out of smaller airports closer to your destination.

This jet is incredibly fuel-efficient due in large part to the Williams/Rolls-Royce FJ44-3A turbofan engines that provide 480 lbs. more thrust at takeoff than the Citation Jet 2. Another contributing factor to the improved fuel economy is the use of natural laminar flow wings which improve overall lift-to-drag performance and smooth landing gear which also contributes to lower fuel consumption.

When it comes to cabin comforts, the CJ3’s cabin sits six passengers comfortably, has multiple outlets for all of your electronic devices, writing tables to allow for productivity in flight, a lavatory, and a small internal baggage compartment that can be accessed while flying. The cabin measures 15′ 8″ in length, 4′ 9″ in height and 4′ 10″ in width. The external baggage space in the Citation Jet 3 is generous at 70 cubic feet and can hold several pieces of luggage.

The Dassault Falcon 900 is a heavy jet designed as a larger, enhanced version of the Falcon 50 super midsize jet. The Falcon 900 received FAA certification in 1986, and while it does share a similar configuration to the Falcon 50, it has a larger range, can seat more passengers and has a longer and wider fuselage. The longer fuselage allows the interior to be more spacious and comfortable, while also providing passengers a bit of separation from the crew.

The Falcon 900s’ design incorporates composite materials wherever possible, drastically reducing the weight of the aircraft. The flight range is impressive, able to travel 4,600 statute miles because of the innovative three-engine configuration. The third engine is ideal for international flights and also offers flight planning and safety benefits. The Falcon 900 can seat up to 12 passengers and travels at average speeds up to 536 mph. The Falcon 900 jets share virtually the same wing design as the Falcon 50.

In 1994, Dassault introduced the Falcon 900EX, a longer range version of the Falcon 900 with increased fuel capacity. The Falcon 900EX features a Honeywell Primus 2000 avionics package, engine upgrades that provide the aircraft with additional thrust, and a Head-Up Display for the pilot.

The Falcon 900s offer a spacious cabin with some seats that can be reclined into a full-length bed perfect for a mid-flight nap. All of the additional seats are also fully adjustable, able to swivel and recline.  This jet also has a private lavatory, as well as an isolated galley and cockpit. The Falcon 900 offers 127 cubic feet of internal baggage space that can be accessed during your flight.

The Dassault Falcon 2000 is a heavy jet that was designed to be more economical option to it’s sister jet the Falcon 900, without sacrificing any of the performance standards that private fliers have grown to love. The Falcon 2000 can travel the U.S. from coast to coast at fast cruise speeds with ease and with impressive fuel economy. The Falcon 2000 typically seats 8-10 and can travel 3,100 nautical miles at average speeds up to 515 mph. It can climb to 37,000 feet in nineteen minutes.

The Falcon 2000 shares the wing and forward fuselage design of the Falcon 900, but differs in design. The 2000s were purposely designed to have a smaller transcontinental range than the 900s to eliminate the need for three engines. The two CFE738 engines allow for the jet to typically need less downtime for repairs and maintenance. The Falcon 2000s also have a redesigned wing, eliminating inboard slats.

This Falcon 2000 was the first private jet that Dassault designed digitally on a computer without a physical model. The CATIA software used to design the Falcon 2000s helped improve the aerodynamic structure and made it possible to simplify the jet’s systems.

The Falcon 2000s use the Collins Pro Line 4 avionics suite. Systems are grouped by their function and are set up so they coincide with the display screens that control those functions.

The Falcon 2000 offers a quiet, roomy cabin with some seats that can be reconfigured into beds for a mid-flight nap. The Falcon 2000 also offers 131 cubic feet of internal baggage space, holding up to 1,600 pounds.

Originally from Surrey, England, I studied Business Management at the University of Nottingham. I now live in South West London and work in the Fulham office as a Senior Sales Associate at Victor. I joined the company in February 2022, and it’s incredible how quickly time has flown—it’s hard to believe it’s already been nearly two and a half years!

What inspired you to join the private aviation industry and Victor?

Growing up around the motorsport industry, I’ve had the privilege of being around some pretty incredible luxury assets. Whenever my family and I would go to Silverstone to watch the Grand Prix I’d see all the helicopters dropping off clients and wonder how complicated it must be for those behind the scenes trying to coordinate so many different travel requirements.

That’s why I was so excited when I heard about Victor through a recruiter. After learning more about the company and understanding how they are trying to shake up the industry through transparency and climate action, I felt like it was a really good fit for me.
